South African SAMA award winning singer/songwriter Karma-Ann Swanepoel said farewell to her homeland and adoring fans late November 2003 when the much celebrated pop chanteuse and former lead singer of HENRY ATE made the move to America to introduce her work to a larger audience.
Four years later, Karma is well on her way to realizing her dream. She has released one critically acclaimed album: “Don’t Walk Fly” (2005), recorded with Grammy award winning engineer and producer Scott Canto (Shakira, Jon Secada, Nine Inch Nails and Ricky Martin) which produced three chart topping singles and is due to release her much anticipated follow up project: “The Riddle”, recorded with producer John D. Thomas (Lauryn Hill, Creed, P.Diddy, Prince, Missy Elliot, Jamie Foxx) in November 2007. Equipped with phenomenal talent, the voice of an angel and a bag full of addictive, melancholic folk songs, Karma’s sound is reminiscent of The Cranberries and Suzanne Vega infused with the pop friendliness of The Killers. Without a doubt Karma’s true gift is the unashamed lyrical heartache infused in her songs – an attribute that has won her the title of being South Africa’s top wordsmith.
Already the hands down favorite in Florida, Karma has blown away audiences in Los Angeles (Viper Room, On the Rox, The Gig & The Mint), Atlanta (Eddies Attic), North Carolina (The Soap Box), New York (BB Kings, Mulcahy’s & Luna Lounge), Seattle (Alki Beach Festival) and toured abroad with sold out performances in London and South Africa. Karma has also shared the stage with Fiction Plane, Scissors for Lefty, G Love and Special Sauce, The Gin Blossoms, Drive Blind and CandleBox.
Embracing her status as an independent artist, Karma exploits every opportunity and means of self-promotion available to her. She has exceeded over 10 000 CD sales independently via her website and live shows, has been featured on over 200 podcasts, has had her album “Don’t Walk Fly” reviewed and praised in over 50 international publications and has built a substantial following and mailing list of adoring fans locally, nationally and internationally.
Recently, Karma’s song “Once” was sampled by Lil’ Wayne and is the backbone of his new single: “Feel Like I’m Dying” from his new album Tha Carter 3. In light of this collaboration and the extensive publicity and public awareness it is generating for Karma and her upcoming album, Karma will be hitting the road and touring America extensively over the next 11 months, on her first national acoustic tour.
