The Dead 60s formed in Liverpool, initially under the name Rest Home, playing cover versions alongside their own original material. Eventually changing their name to Pinhole, their first release was the 4-track "122 Duke Street" EP (named after the address of Liverpool bar The Pit, where the band played many of its first shows). In 2001, they released the "Breaking Hearts & Windows" EP on Thrill City records, and the single “So Over You/Morning Rain” on Too Nice Records in 2002, which reached number 8 in the John Peel Festive 50 of 2002. Pinhole toured extensively throughout the UK supporting artists such as Green Day & The Hives, but announced that they had split up via their website early 2003. After a few months, the band re-emerged as The Dead 60s, with Matt McManamon on vocals and guitar, Ben Gordon on guitar and organ, Charlie Turner on bass, and Bryan Johnson on drums, signed to Deltasonic Records, and began to tour heavily throughout the UK, supporting artists such as Morrissey, Kasabian, The Thrills, The Music, The Coral, The Zutons, The Bees & Supergrass. Debut album ”The Dead 60s” was recorded at The Ranch studios, produced by Central Nervous System, mixed by Mike Hedges, and released in September 2005. It made number 23 in the UK Album chart. In the US, the single “Riot Radio” became the number 3 most added song on Alternative Radio behind White Stripes & Coldplay.

The Dead 60s moved to New York during the start of 2007 to record their sophomore album, “Time To Take Sides”, produced by David Kahne and engineered by Joe Barresi. However, in February 2008 the band issued a press release announcing their split, and “Time To Take Sides” remains unreleased in the UK.
