Formed in college, Nussia released their debut album, “Our Time Has Come”, in 2002, but unfortunately, not long after, all four members went their separate ways.
However, Nussia's story was rekindled in London in 2003, where Stephan, along with the help of fashion designer George Ormerod, found a studio that was the perfect environment for him to weave his thought provoking musical magic.
On one occasion, taking the opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of the capital, Stephan visited George at his home in historic Winchester, Hampshire. One evening, George, who used to be in a band called Moid, reeled off some beautiful chords on his guitar. Within three minutes, the pair had completed a song called “Before Tonight”. Pleased with their efforts, George and Stephan attempted a second, “Do You Feel?”, piano led, buoyant and bluesy, with some Lennon/McCartney influence, and benefiting from a saxophone element that eases in towards the end.
With Stephan’s creative streak now in the groove, his collection of songs grew. His material combines warm, mellow melodies with the fantastic tone of his voice, which is relaxing, cooling and chilling as well as uplifting. All this in one voice, you ask? Yes, all in one voice.
Over the next 2 years Stephan nurtured, built and perfected a second album, “N-Titled”, showcasing his many talents by playing many of the instruments himself. Not wanting this hard work to go to waste, and under the guise of Nussia, Stephan treated us to acoustic sets of his tracks, playing intimate gigs in the likes of Tufnell Park and Kentish Town, to name a few.
Among the many highlights of “N-Titled” are “All This”, where a piano tiptoes slowly around the vocals, eventually developing into a rhythmic combination of guitar and piano, with the former contributing a few decent mini solos; “Maybe”, an enchanting track, pregnant with anticipation, and putting the listener in mind of Nick Drake or even a young Bob Dylan, and the harmonious, “Autumn”, introduced with some Dandy Warhols type slide guitar, building into a discussion of the inevitable, unstoppable changing of the seasons, and the weather, a subject that shows Stephan has obviously spent too long in England. Delivered with a deep, almost drowsy voice, this song continues the warmth that can be felt throughout this collection.
As well as Drake and Dylan, Nussia's material has been compared to Ray Lamontagne, and also the king of relaxation, Jack Johnson – allow “N-Titled” to lead you on a captivating journey of musical quality.
