Morcheeba

Morcheeba were formed in the mid 1990’s by brothers Paul Godfrey, a DJ, and multi-instrumentalist Ross Godfrey. After the recruitment of vocalist Skye Edwards, the trio decided to join ‘mor’, meaning ‘middle of the road’ and "cheeba", taken from a slang term for marijuana, to arrive at the band’s moniker. Debut album “Who Can You Trust?” was released in April 1996 on Indochina in the UK and Discovery Records in the US, but didn’t meet with much success, 3 singles from the album, “Trigger Hippie”, “Tape Loop” and “The Music That We Hear (Moog Island)” charting at numbers 40, 42 and 47 respectively on the UK Singles chart.

After the band’s move from Indochina to Sire, they released second album “Big Calm” (1998), which climbed into the Top 20 of the UK Album chart, reaching number 18, but the singles it produced didn’t climb as high on the corresponding singles chart (“Shoulder Holster” got to number 53, “Blindfold” number 56, “Let Me See” number 46 and “Part of the Process” number 38). Third LP “Fragments of Freedom”, released in 2000, peaked at number 6 in the UK Album chart, lead single “Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day” broke into the UK Top 40, becoming their highest charting single at number 34.

A label move again, this time to Warner Bros, preceded the release of fourth effort “Charango” (UK Album chart number 7), and following the release of “Parts of the Process (The Very Best Of Morcheeba)” in 2003 (which achieved number 6 in the UK Album chart), Edwards was asked to leave the band by the Godfrey brothers, due to the brothers’ desire to try different things and fulfil different musical ambitions.

In 2005, Morcheeba recorded their sixth album, “The Antidote”, recruiting Daisy Martey (formerly of Noonday Underground) to replace Edwards on vocals, and charting at number 17 on the UK Album chart. However, Martey was fired from the band later that year, temporarily replaced by Jody Sternberg for their live performances. It was French singer Manda who looked after lead vocals on seventh LP “Dive Deep”, released in February 2008, self produced by the Godfrey brothers and featuring several other guest vocalists including Judie Tzuke, Thomas Dybdahl and Cool Calm Pete.
