Employment

Artist: Kaiser Chiefs

Album Released: March, 2005

Review by Craig:

Kaiser Chiefs have to be one of the great finds of 2005, I've been totally hooked by their outrageous sounds and interesting music. Their songs seem to stick in your head, as an example when I ran London's Nike 10k, “I Predict A Riot” kept me company along the whole course, it moved me to the finish line… lets not talk about my time though. I was so hooked by that track that I went out and bought the album and to my amazement the whole album sparkled with pure musical enjoyment. Being a South African, at first I could not understand why a group of English lads from Leeds chose to call their band 'Kaiser Chiefs', but after doing some research I found the answer. Lucas Radebe, one of the best footballers from SA and the former Leeds captain played for the Kaiser Chiefs football team in SA, and I think it’s a very catchy name too. Looking forward to seeing what the lads come up with next.

Review by Dan:

Avid Leeds United fans, the quintet take their name from one of South Africa’s best football teams, who once counted former Leeds captain Lucas Radebe amongst their playing staff. “Employment” is one of the most bustling albums I’ve heard in a long time. These boys have a lot to say, and each song tells a story – I’ve never seen as many words in a song as there are in “Saturday Night”. The voice of Ricky Wilson delivers the predominantly rhyming words in a seemingly aristocratic way, often resembling a young Ray Thomas (of Moody Blues fame), particularly on “Oh My God”, and “Caroline, Yes”. My pick would be the streetwise “I Predict a Riot”, which reminds me of those pioneers of early Britpop, The Jam, but also up there are “Everyday I Love You Less and Less”, which could easily be Madness, and the Sunday stroll that is “You Can Have It All”. “Employment” was a lot of fun to listen to.
