Mind Body & Soul

Artist: Joss Stone

Album Released: September, 2004

Review by Dan:

Despite being her 2nd album, this collection of 14 tracks, all co-written by Joss is, in her own words, her ‘real debut’ (first release “The Soul Sessions” was a selection of cover versions recorded with various artists). “Mind Body & Soul” is a large slice of soulful R&B, with a helping of reggae in “Less Is More”, gospel in “Security” and the odd sprinkling of pop, and represents a very intimate and individual piece of work. Joss’ vibrant, sturdy voice belies her young years (she was just 17 when she recorded this), and it’s smokiness and quality deflects the listener’s attention from the fact that, lyrically, the songs are on the wrong side of weak. My favourites would be the fresh “You Had Me”, suggestive grooviness of “Don’t Cha Wanna Ride”, and the measured, deliberate collaboration with a fellow West Country great, Portishead’s Beth Gibbons on “Killing Time”.
