Twentysomething
Artist: Jamie Cullum
Album Released: October, 2004
Review by Dan:
The second album from Jamie Cullum provides us with a glimpse of some excellent original material from the jazz/pop crooner. In the title track, Jamie, accompanied by some thoughtful acoustic bass, considers the challenges and situations that can engulf the life of a young adult. Indeed “All at Sea” sees a lonely Jamie, perhaps suffering from the trials and tribulations of youth. However, he soon forgets his solitude, and finds solace in covering some well known classics of yester year, contributing some excellent piano work to his own version of Cole Porter’s “I Get a Kick Out Of You”, and adding a reggae type groove to “I Could Have Danced All Night”. Jimi Hendrix’s “Wind Cries Mary” and Radiohead’s “High and Dry” see Jamie delving into his rock collection for some inspiration, but he lapses back into originality with the unlikely but smart mix of violins and samba beats for “Next Year, Baby”. This is a modern take on relaxed jazz, but can at times transport you back to 1950’s New York City. A mixed verdict from me – it’s not highly original in terms of songs, but it is a laidback and enjoyable listen.
