Love Angel Music Baby

Artist: Gwen Stefani

Album Released: November, 2004

Review by Craig:

No Doubt’s front woman mixes her first debut album with amazing results - this is a very powerful solo album. The musical talents of Gwen Stefani are shown throughout this extraordinary collection. With hit singles like “What You Waiting For?”, “Hollaback Girl” and “Rich Girl” things can only look positive for Gwen. She also needs to thank the other famous artists that had some input on this great collaboration of music, from the likes of Andre 3000 and Dr Dre to New Order, not forgetting Eve, who is featured on the “Rich Girl” track. The wide variety of tunes on this album shows how much talent Gwen has. Hollaback girls are US style cheerleaders similar to Harajuku Girls from Tokyo’s Harajuku district famous for its hip and happening cutting edge of underground culture. I also have a great feeling for the song “Bubble Pop Electric” which could have come out of a Grease movie. “Love Angel Music Baby” gets my vote.

Review by Dan:

After nearly a decade fronting punk rock outfit No Doubt, glamorous Gwen Stefani serves up mix of hip hop, R&B and electro disco as her first solo album. Demanding opener “What You Waiting For?” combines thumping, flaunty rhythms with Gwen’s considerable vocal talent. An Eve rap features on “Rich Girl”, which is produced by Dr Dre, and the strong start to the album continues with the percussion heavy “Hollaback Girl”. My favourite is the dreamy electronica of “Cool”, but I also enjoyed “Bubble Pop Electric”, which lives up to its moniker by bubbling along happily, a fun song; and the luscious ballad “Luxurious”. In my opinion the quality tails off towards the end, “Crash” being a particular example of a filler track – it’s still catchy and listenable, but there’s nothing in the second half of the album that caused my finger to jab the repeat button, despite Outkast’s Andre 3000 helping out on “Long Way To Go”. Whilst being a change from her previous experiences, this is a competent debut.
