Costello Music
Artist: Fratellis
Album Released: September, 2006
Review by Dan:
Frenetic, enthusiastic and aggressive Britpop from the Glaswegian 3 piece, typified by frivolous opener “Henrietta”, which hits the ground running. “Flathead”’s momentum alternates between a swagger and a surge, as does “Cuntry Boys & City Girls”, Mince’s drums leading the verses and middle eight but taking a back seat in the hurtling chorus. The bluster eases a bit for the idolisation that is “Whistle For The Choir”, the closest these Scots get to love song balladry, but normal service is resumed with the recognisable chanting of “Chelsea Dagger” – you can easily see why this has become a popular terrace anthem, it’s yobbish, beer swilling rock at its best, and despite mosh2music being over on Glastonbury’s Other Stage watching The Coral at the time, we could hear it sung by the trio and their thousands of backing singers, carried on the wind and through the rain from the imposing Pyramid stage.
“Costello Music” welds garage rock, with some punkish glam and a bit of ska thrown in for good measure, and the delivery of it comes across as fun, and without ceremony, so much so that even a deviation to some cocky American-style country in “Vince The Loveable Stoner” doesn’t sound out of place. There aren’t any fillers on here, and although the subject matter of the tracks does tend to be a bit one dimensional (apart from the story of Vince, think girls, girls and girls), it’s still very strong lyrically, and the zeal and energy with which the trio perform the material cuts through this perceived shortcoming. An excellent, carefree debut.
