The Last Broadcast

Artist: Doves

Album Released: April, 2002

Review by Dan:

On 2002’s “The Last Broadcast”, Doves serve up a menu that covers a variety of tastes. Far more than an appetiser is “There goes the fear”, crashing and rushing through, but then slow, almost as if the vocals themselves are running from fear, and keep stopping to catch their breath. The main course is a bit mellower, “M62 song” conjures up expectations of a fast, furious track, a motorway song, something to drive to, but yet it’s gentle, tender, even haunting. “New York” benefits from a strings accompaniment, and “Friday’s Dust” is slow and moody. Dessert, however, livens the meal up again, in the shape of “Pounding”, with an intro The Strokes would be proud of, leading to a song that lives up to it’s name, and pounds away at your senses. This album has something for everyone, and once I’d heard it I sincerely hoped it was not the last broadcast from this talented three piece.
