Some Cities

Artist: Doves

Album Released: February, 2005

Review by Dan:

Doves for me are all about one or two monstrous tracks per album, tracks which, on their own, make the album worth buying. “Lost Souls” had “Here it comes” and “Catch the sun”, “The Last Broadcast” had “There goes the fear”, and “Some Cities” is no exception. “Snowden” is that monstrous track, as towering as the mountain itself. I first heard it browsing the aisles of my favourite music store and immediately thought “this must be Doves' new album, I’m getting it!” As if out of respect for “Snowden”, the following track, “The Storm” doesn’t kick in for at least 15 seconds, giving the listener a chance to appreciate and recover from the song they’ve just heard. “Sky starts falling” could count those Kings of Leon as one of its influences, and piano backed “Black & white town” is also worth a listen. Doves' third album shows that they’re flying in the right direction.
