Blink 182
Artist: Blink 182
Album Released: November, 2003
Review by Craig:
Whether you’re a Blink 182 fan or not, this has got to be one of their most powerful albums. The album, simply titled "Blink 182", seems like their first album, and in the words of Mark Hoppus, 'on this album, we really made a conscious effort to go in with the attitude that we’re not making our next record, we’re making our first record, so we went in and we didn’t think about what people expected from Blink 182'. “All Of This” has to be one of the most exciting songs on the album, how often do people get to work with a musical genius such as Robert Smith of The Cure, the sound and the words to this song are amazing. The drum wizardry of Travis on this album is mind blowing, try and make out all the different drum sounds as you rock through this. Look out for the mesmerizing track “I Miss You” and the sexed up “Feeling This”. If asked to pick a favourite track from "Blink 182", I couldn't - get the album and experience the ride for yourself, the Blinksters have come of age…
Review by Dan:
5th studio album from the all American trio, and initially it seems that, despite the two year break since “Take Off Your Pants And Jacket”, its business as usual. “Feeling This” buzzes along energetically, the lyrics splitting themselves between lustful love and romantic love, accompanied by familiar punk melodies. However, the anticipated maturity that was rumoured to accompany this self titled offering begins to kick in almost immediately. The demanding “I Miss You”, complete with chanty chorus is sandwiched between the dark doses of angst that are “Obvious” and “Violence”. Maturity is confirmed as a poem from the grandfather of bassist Mark Hoppus to Mark’s grandmother during World War Two is recited at the start of “Stockholm Syndrome”. That’s not to say Blink have lost any of their driving aggression (they reassure us of this with “Go”), they’ve just got a bit more thoughtful, and are spending a bit less time on the things that make adolescents giggle. I don’t think "Blink 182" is representative of the band’s career to date, it's merely another piece of the Blinkster jigsaw.
