Mabel And I

Artist: Beulah

Album Released: June, 2005

Review by Dan:

This debut album from singer/songwriter Beulah Garside is full of reflective melodies that, at times, err on the side of wistful. Beulah's voice caresses the interpretive lyrics that are evident throughout the album, from the tender “Stay” and “I Can’t Wait”, through “Miss Me No More”, which ponders the process of falling out of love, and “You’re Gone”, reflecting on the delicate sadness of losing someone close. However, despite the subjects of these tracks, Beulah manages to relax the listener, erasing any sadness that their content may invoke. Away from the ballads, “Leaving Home” is addictively upbeat, and “Sweet Kinda Something” playfully explores a father-daughter relationship. A close call but my favourite would have to be the title track, which remembers those friends of childhood, tooth fairies, and is one of a handful that involve the London Session Orchestra. It would be easy to bill Beulah as the new Norah Jones, or mention a young Judy Collins when describing “Mabel and I”. However, these comparisons would unfairly ignore the originality of Beulah's beautiful, commanding, heartfelt voice, which makes “Mabel and I” a touchingly romantic collection that deserves your time.
