Let Go
Artist: Avril Lavigne
Album Released: June, 2002
Review by Dan:
Combining a single minded attitude with a style of music which recalls that of fellow Canadian Alanis Morissette, Avril Lavigne bursts onto the music scene with her debut "Let Go". Self penned and possibly very personal, it shows that this untamed pocket rocket has firmly distanced herself from the various teenage ‘pop sensations’ of recent times, both home-grown and those that have been catapulted over the Pond. A lonely, concerned Avril delivers opener “Losing Grip” with a confidence and assertiveness which defies her young years. This is particularly evident in fun skater rock anthem “Sk8er Boi”, telling a story of young love lost. “I’m With You” is morose, almost sulky, and on the poignant “Tomorrow”, Avril sheds her tomboyish image for just a few minutes with some very feminine vocal work backed with an acoustic guitar. Whilst it’s very hard for me to pick a musical favourite (a fact that was reinforced when I saw Avril at Brixton Academy in London just after this album was released), lyrically the album isn’t strong, the upbeat “My World” being the one to stand out. However, natural development with improve this area and I’m keenly anticipating her sophomore LP.
